World Thalassemia Day is a global healthcare event that is observed on May 8 annually to raise awareness about this health condition, its causes, treatment and prevention. Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder caused when the body doesn’t make enough of a protein called haemoglobin, an important part of red blood cells. According to the CDC, when there isn’t enough haemoglobin, the body’s red blood cells don’t function properly and they last shorter periods, so fewer healthy red blood cells are travelling in the bloodstream.
