The United States has halted a shipment of powerful bombs to Israel as Washington puts pressure on its ally to avoid a full-scale invasion of the Gaza Strip’s southern city of Rafah. Israel has threatened a major assault on Rafah to defeat Hamas fighters, but Western nations and the United Nations have warned against such action due to humanitarian concerns.
In response to the expected offensive, the Biden administration paused a weapons shipment to Israel, marking the first such delay since the US expressed full support for Israel after Hamas’ October 7 attack. The war began when Palestine-based Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and abducting about 250 others. Hamas’ unprecedented attack brought a sharp retaliation from Israel in which 34,789 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed, the Gaza Health Ministry said.
