The Leach family has offered a welcoming presence both inside their store, the Family Music Center, and at their own home.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Family Music Center has been open since 1921, and the Leach family has offered a welcoming presence both inside and outside their store since then.

That’s because they have helped Asian and Pacific Islander refugees settle in Iowa since the 1970s, including when owner Dave Leach’s parents offered their home to refugees fleeing the Vietnam War. 

“There was always more than a dozen. And it was two bedroom, full basement. And then when we had 24, we had four people staying in an out building,” Leach explained to Local 5 News.

He said the reason his family did this was because these people needed a place to stay, and they just wanted to help.
