Samajwadi Party (SP) put in all its efforts and did all kinds of experiments to win the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat, however, its cycle could never get ahead in the race. In 1996, SP fielded film star Raj Babbar from the Lucknow seat and in 1998, the producer and director of the film Umrao Jaan, Muzaffar Ali fought from this constituency, but both of them could not stand in front of BJP’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
In the 2004 elections, SP gave a ticket to Dr Madhu Gupta, a well-known gynecologist from Lucknow, but she too could not show any results. In the 2019 elections, SP fielded Poonam Shatrughan Sinha, wife of film star Shatrughan Sinha, but she too could not give momentum to the “cycle”. This time SP has given a ticket to Lucknow Central MLA Ravidas Mehrotra, who is contesting against Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
