Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of a month-long fasting period for Muslims around the globe, is being celebrated in several parts of the world on April 10. However, as the crescent moon of Shawwal was not sighted in India on April 9, Indian Muslims will celebrate Eid Al-Fitr 2024 on April 11. Meanwhile, Muslims in Kerala, Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh, in addition to some Shia Muslims in isolated parts of the country are also celebrating Eid today (April 10).

Now, the question arises as to why Muslims in the same country are celebrating their most regarded festival on different dates and why there is no uniformity over the confirmation of Eid Al-Fitr 2024. To understand this difference, one must be aware of how the sighting of the Crescent Moon is determined.
